This tour is ideal if you would like a bit more time and flexibility than a standard stop. It suits nature lovers, keen walkers and anyone who wants to explore beyond the main viewpoint.

The hiking tour offers two options, and you can choose between two different bus departures from Eidfjord to Vøringsfossen depending on how long you would like to stay at the top.

Option 1 – Early departure at 10:20

Your ticket will show the 12:00 departure, but you are also free to join the 10:20 bus instead. This gives you approximately 3 hours and 25 minutes at Vøringsfoss.
Perfect if you want a longer walk and time to explore parts of the historic old road while enjoying the scenery.

Option 2 – Later departure at 12:00

The 12:00 departure gives you 1 hour and 45 minutes at the top. This is ideal for a shorter hike, a wander across the spectacular viewing platforms, and time to admire the waterfall without feeling rushed.

Return departure (both options)

14:15 – departure from Vøringsfossen
14:45 – arrival in Eidfjord

This tour includes:

  • Shuttle transfer on a modern and comfortable bus from Eidfjord to the best viewpoint of the waterfall (available on selected cruise days only)
  • Digital guide included – learn about nature, history, and local culture along the route.
  • Audioguide in 15 languages (listen to the digital guide).
  • A longer stop at the Vøringsfossen waterfall than the original Vøringsfoss waterfall tour.
  • Several panoramic viewpoints for spectacular photos of the waterfall and Måbødalen valley.
  • Scenic stair bridge, cross the gorge behind the waterfall.
  • Stop by the historic Fossli Hotel.
  • Return trip to Eidfjord included – look for the Book Hardanger sign.

What can you do at the top?

From the top, you’ll have different options:

  • Head uphill onto the mountain plateau, where marked trails lead you into the open landscape of Hardangervidda. Here, you can enjoy peaceful walks, sweeping views and that wonderfully fresh mountain air. Suitable for both options.
  • Or simply stay near the viewpoints, take photographs, and soak up the scenery at a relaxed pace. Perfect with option 2.

There are designated walkways and viewing platforms on both sides of the waterfall, and a stair bridge connects the two. The part closest to where you get off the bus is accessible to wheelchair users and strollers, but the hiking tour itself is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs.

Seats on this bus tour are limited, so we recommend booking in advance.

FAQ

Where can I buy tickets?

You can easily book your seat directly on this page so your ticket is ready before departure. Check the calendar for available dates. Book Hardanger is a local non-profit company supporting local value creation and sustainable tourism.
Tickets can also be purchased at Eidfjord Tourist Office if space is available.

Is the tour suitable for strollers or wheelchairs?

Unfortunately, this hiking tour is not suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. The area near the bus drop-off is accessible, but the trails are too steep.

What will I experience on the trip?

The journey takes you up the steep Måbødalen valley to the plateau, 750 metres above sea level. Along the way, you’ll experience Vøringsfossen from several spectacular viewpoints, and the bus stops close to the main viewpoint.
The highlight of the trip is the famous stair bridge with 99 steps, spanning the gorge and offering a unique perspective of the waterfall.
Depending on your chosen departure time, you may also have the chance to explore a larger area, including the old bridge and parts of the historic road leading towards Måbødalen.

What should I wear?

Vøringsfossen lies at 750 metres altitude near Hardangervidda, where weather can change quickly. Bring warm, windproof and waterproof clothing, as well as sturdy shoes with good grip — even in summer.

Will this tour include a local guide?

There is no local guide on this tour, as you explore independently. However, a multilingual digital audioguide is included.

Is it possible to reach Vøringsfossen by local bus?

The local bus has very few departures, so unfortunately it is not practical. Therefore, we have set up our own tour bus departures. See the calendar for available departures.

Please note!

The bus ride takes approx. 25 minutes each way.

Return to Eidfjord from the same location where the bus dropped you off. Please be at the meeting point 10 minutes before departure at 14:15.
Look for the Book Hardanger sign in the windscreen, as a different bus may operate the return trip.
