Get a unique experience in Eidfjord on this tour to Kjeåsen with a small group! Kjeåsen farm stead has one of the most scenic locations in Norway, with spectacular views of the Hardangerfjord.

The farm is nestled on a cliff 600 straight above the Hardangerfjord, and what is more exceptional is that people lived here without a road connection until 1974. Until then, they had to walk the challenging path up and down the mountainside for everything they needed outside the farm, including going to school.

Unique Kjeåsen mountain farm

So why did people decide to live in a place this remote? Because of the abundance of natural resources such as fertile soil, hunting and fishing.

The road was built as part of the construction of the Simadal Power Station in the 1970s, but by then most of the people wanted a more modern and simpler lifestyle and moved away. One woman continued to live here until just a few years ago. In winter, the road was closed and she could be completely cut off for weeks at a time. The road still closes during winter – but today, no one lives there permanently.

Skytjefossen Waterfall

Our tour also includes a stop to admire the Skytjefossen waterfall, which boasts an impressive drop of 300 meters. While regulated for hydroelectric energy production, the waterfall periodically experiences robust water flow, creating a great spectacle for those fortunate to witness it.

FAQ

Where can I buy tickets?

You can easily book your seat directly on this page, so your ticket is ready before departure.
Check the calendar for available dates. Small-group tours usually run on days when cruise ships visit Eidfjord, as taxi availability is better then.
If there are still seats available, tickets can also be purchased at the Eidfjord Tourist Office.
Book Hardanger is a local non-profit company working to support local value creation and a more sustainable community.

Is the tour suitable for strollers or wheelchairs?

Unfortunately, Kjeåsen is not particularly accessible for strollers or wheelchairs. The terrain is steep, and the path from the car park is narrow. The remainder of the tour through Simadalen is accessible for wheelchair users.

Please let us know in advance if you need a wheelchair-friendly vehicle so we can reserve the correct taxi.
Also inform us if travelling with small children so we can provide childseats.

When is the best time to visit Kjeåsen?

Spring, summer and autumn (May–October) offer the best conditions for visiting Kjeåsen and enjoying the spectacular views. The road is closed during winter.

What will I experience on this tour?

To reach Kjeåsen, the taxi follows the scenic Simadalsfjord before continuing into the beautiful Simadalen valley. The road up to the farm is narrow, and the final stretch passes through a 2.5-kilometre-long tunnel.

As part of the small group tour, you’ll also travel through the entire Simadalen valley. At the end of the valley, you may catch a glimpse of Skytjefossen waterfall cascading dramatically down the mountainside.

What should I wear?

Kjeåsen sits 600 metres above the Simadalsfjord. Bring warm, windproof and waterproof clothing, and wear sturdy shoes with good grip – even in summer if the weather calls for it.

Where do I find the taxi?

The taxi will be waiting near the Eidfjord Tourist Office, at the central island between Coop and Vøringfoss Hotel.
